With the EU Referendum on the horizon, the concept of getting prepared for June 23rd has taken on a whole new meaning for Arthur Cox Northern Ireland after the leading law firm signed up to take part in the Grant Thornton Runway Run.

Taking place on the runway at George Best Belfast City Airport at 11pm on the night of the EU Referendum vote, the 5k run is open to teams of four from businesses of all sizes across Northern Ireland. Over 650 runners are expected to take part.

Eight of Arthur Cox’s 90-strong staff at its Belfast office have agreed to put their best foot forward and represent the firm across two teams in the race, for which The Mary Peters Trust has been selected as the chosen charity.

The first of two Arthur Cox teams is made up of two Associates from the finance practice, Damian McElholm and Niall Mahon, and from the corporate and commercial practice, Cahal Carvill and James Flanagan.

Lining up in the other Arthur Cox team are Associates Emma Darragh from finance and Chris Fullerton from corporate and commercial, along with trainee Andrew Black and paralegal Conor McAleese.

David White, Chair of Arthur Cox Northern Ireland’s CSR Committee, said:

“The chance to take part in a 5k run on a major airport runway at 11 o’clock in the evening doesn’t arise very often, and I know that every member of both Arthur Cox teams is very much looking forward to participating.

“The event is the latest addition to Arthur Cox’s extensive CSR programme, which has assumed a very active theme recently with our tag rugby team starting their season last month and 21 members of staff commencing the Global Corporate 100 Day Challenge, which sets individuals the task of walking 10,000 steps per day for 100 days.

“The Mary Peters Trust is a very worthwhile charity which plays an important role in helping Northern Ireland’s aspiring young athletes realise their maximum potential, and we are pleased to support the Trust through our Runway Run participation.

“Knowing the individuals involved, there will no doubt be an element of competition between the two Arthur Cox teams, although I don’t think any time targets have been set as yet. We wish them both well.”

Organised by Athletics NI, the Runway Run invites entries to three categories – male, female and mixed – with prizes being awarded in each category. Team members’ finishing times are combined to determine the winner.
