Monday 22nd February 2016: Arthur Cox trainees Ross O’Mahony and Aaron Vickery, representing the Solicitors’ Apprentice Debating Society of Ireland, have won the Grand Final of the annual Irish Times Debate. The debate, which has been running since 1960 and is the oldest intervarsity debating competition in Ireland, took place at The Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin at the weekend.

While nearly 300 students entered the competition just 12 contested the final. Ross and Aaron won the team competition after opposing the motion; This house believes that 2016 should be the last year in which Ireland commemorates the Easter Rising. The victory was all the sweeter for Ross as he was a runner up in the same competition five years ago.

Clíodhna Ní Chéileachair, a final year Law and Philosophy student at UCD won the individual speaker competition.  Clíodhna will be joining Arthur Cox as a trainee after she graduates.  Caoimhe Stafford, who will be joining Arthur Cox as a trainee this summer, and Sarah Mortell from TCD Philosophical Society were runners up in the team event.

This year’s victories continue a long history of Arthur Cox representation at the Irish Times Debate. Eugene McCague, former Managing Partner and Chairman of the firm, won the team prize in 1980.  Last year, current trainee Christopher O’Reilly reached the final as an individual and in 2014 Dearbhla O’Gorman, now an associate with the firm, was part of the winning team.
