Arthur Cox has won the Excellence in International CSR Award at the 2014 Chambers Ireland CSR Awards, held in Dublin last night. The award is in recognition of the firm’s trainee-led Zambia Project which is designed to raise standards of living in rural regions of Zambia, by developing and investing in health, agriculture and education infrastructure, hand in hand with local communities.
Commenting on the award the Managing Partner of Arthur Cox, Brian O’Gorman, said: “We are truly proud of our trainees to win this award. Since the project began six years ago, almost 100 trainees have travelled to Zambia and have transformed one of the most dilapidated rural health clinics in south western Zambia, servicing 5,700 people, into the leading rural clinic in the district. This achievement is exceptional.”
The project has also realised the construction of a bespoke maternity ward and sanitation facilities to supplement the clinic while the sustainability element of the project has educated farmers in better farming practices, brought rice farming to the region for the first time and has tackled severe food insecurity and hunger for many hundreds of families.
The Arthur Cox trainees are now embarking on a new project in Zambia to build radio schools to provide a government-approved curriculum to the children who cannot attend formal schools due to geographical and financial barriers.
